Archery Workshop Date Changed

Due to a conflict with the Hay Judging Awards Banquet, we will not be meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18th. Instead we are meeting on Monday, October 24 from 6pm to 8pm at the County Extension Office in Rusk. Anyone that is new or returning to the the archery program must attend this workshop to participate. So mark your calendars, save it to your phone, or put a note on the fridge....Just don't miss this workshop! Pizza will be served to those who attend. Additional information in regards to the archery program will be given out at the workshop!

The Cherokee County Jr. Livestock Show Concession Committee will meet tomorrow evening (Tuesday - Nov. 2, 2010) at the CEO from 6 PM to begin planning and discuss details of the 2011 Concession Stand. RIFLE DISCIPLE INTEREST???

All members or parents who would like to see the rifle discipline of the Cherokee County Shooting Sports program get up and running need to contact the new County Shooting Sports Coordinator, Clint Anderson via email (clint75925@yahoo.com) to be placed on the meeting list.

Mr. Anderson is already in his second year of coordinating the Archery discipline and has graciously volunteered to Coordinate the Shooting Sports Program as a whole, Providing insight and directions to those who wish to coordinate the other disciplines of the program (pistol, rifle, shotgun,black powder).

An informational meeting will be scheduled within the next month or so to give each of you a better idea of what it will take to start the rifle discipline, as well as what is going to be required of the volunteers who lead/coach the discipline.

I know that many of you have inquired about the rifle discipline saying that you are willing to help but "can't be in charge" for what ever reason. Nothing against any of you directly. However, if this discipline is going to get started, someone will have to step up and take the reigns.

Leading/teaching a project is a scary prospect and I completely understand your hesitance.

If this is something that you would like to have your kids participate in and you are willing to help, please consider this. As parents, we are the most influential leaders in the lives of our children and as such, we lead by example, whether we intend to or not. Stepping out of the "comfort zone" to take the lead teaches them to do the same.

Think of how proud you'd be to see your child take a leadership roll in the 4-H club, church group, school council, sports group, etc...

After all, 4-H is about creating the next generation of leaders by "making the best better".

4-H PALS MEETING REMINDER

PALS MEETING MONDAY AUGUST 23, 2010 @ 6:30 PM in the County Extension Office Meeting Room. Please note the PALS Meeting Calendar under the important links section on the upper right side of this blog for future meetings and loose agendas.

As you may or may not know, in response to a mandate from the State Congress, all State Agencies have had to tighten their belts for the remainder of this biennium and reduce there budgets by 5%. Extension did not escape this cut and 4-H has taken the heaviest hit, resulting in the loss of six (6) 4-H agents within our 4-H District alone. Thankfully, Cherokee County was not effected by this initial mandatory reduction in force (RIF) but more cuts are promised within the next year and we must all be ready as it is a sure bet that our county experience cuts in the next go-round. Several issue need to be addressed regarding this possibility to ensure the smooth operation of the county 4-H program in the future.

Please bring with you any ideas or issues that you wish brought to light in regards to future or current projects of programs.

Project Show

The deadline for the Project Show has been extended to August 6th. at 5:00 pm. The site of the event is still to be determined (sorry about that), but we will be at 10:00.

Each participant needs to fill the registration form and get it to Willie by 5:00 pm on the 6th. You may bring it to the Extension Office, mail it or fax.

Just a reminder that photography IS one of the projects, so bring in your photos. We are following the same guidelines we used for county.

PALS MEETING REMINDER

The end of year PALS meeting will be held on May 24th in the Cherokee County Extension Office @ 6:30 PM.

Topics of discussion include but are not limited to:
Financial Review, Scholarships, Stock Show Concession Stand Review, Shooting Sports - Rifle, New Executive Officer Elections, and New County Project Consideration.

"PALS" stands for 4-H "PARENT AND ADULT LEADERS ASSOCIATION". This is the group that provides funding for all county-wide projects. If you or someone in your club has an interest that is not being pursued and would like to see it offered as a county-wide project then please come to this meeting and make that issue or interest known to all.

In 2010, PALS funded ($3500.00) the Archery Program that is up an running well thanks to the parents and leaders who brought the idea to PALS at the May 2009 meeting. This is the time to bring forth new ideas or revive old ones for consideration for next year. I'd like to see representation from all clubs in the county so please come and meet with us.

If you would like to have input on next years concession operations, then make plans to attend the concession committee meetings in the fall. PALS Kick-Off Meeting Change

Starting on August 1, 2009 all club enrollment (member, manager, & volunteer) will be done online using the "4-H Connect" Management System. Membership forms will no longer be necessary unless the member, manager or volunteer does not have access to the internet.

This system is fairly self explanatory and is generally easy to navigate. All club managers are encouraged to attend the PALS meeting where they will have the opportunity to familiarize them selves with the system.

Every family should download and print the 6 Page system manual for reference in accomplishing their enrollment for the 2009-2010 4-H Year. Select the link below to download the manual.

January 26 PALS Meeting Minutes

The following minutes are from the PALS meeting held on January 26, 2009. Managers, please distribute to your club parents prior to the March PALS meeting.

Attendance: Vonnie Anderson, Melissa Rathbun, Wendy Emprimo, Willie Arnwine, Greg Allen, Brandie Hathorn, Clay Hathorn, Christie Tuitsch, Brenda Rempfer, Tandi Dickey, Michele Partin

1. The minutes from the November meeting were read and accepted.
2. Treasury Report – Treasurer was not in attendance. There has been no change in the account other than coke machine money deposited of approximately $73.
3. Concession Stand Committee reported that clubs have been assigned times to work the Stand for the Livestock Show and are planning to work according to schedule. The Committee is working on obtaining the necessary donations of supplies and food. Whataburger has committed to donating all the vegetables as they have done in past years. **Each club should bring 2 large jars of pickles for the concession stand** The Committee will meet again on March 5 at in the courthouse to finalize plans for the livestock show.
4. The status of camp reimbursement payments was discussed. Payments will be made once a new treasurer is in place and set up on the accounts.
5. A motion for Michelle Partin to replace Amy Goodwin as Treasurer was made by Melissa Rathbun, seconded by Wendy Emprimo and approved by vote. Willie will arrange for the signature cards to be changed and supply Michelle with the account information.
6. Food Show awards were paid for by Wendi Green. A motion for reimbursement of award expenses was made, seconded and approved.
7. The upcoming shooting sports training program was discussed. A motion was made by Melissa Rathbun for PALS to send 4 adults (2 archery/2 small bore rifle) at the cost of $110 plus $50 per day per-diem to the course in February. The motion was seconded by Wendy Emprimo and approved by vote. A motion was then made to amend the shooting sports decision to include a 2 year commitment to the county for the adult volunteers that are sent to the training class. This motion was also approved by vote.
8. The Entomology Project competition was discussed. Due to lack of a project leader no practices or meetings have been scheduled prior to the competition on February 24. Brenda Rempfer volunteered to be project coordinator for the Entomology Project. Brenda will begin practices as soon as possible.
9. The County Fashion Show entry deadline is February 2 and competition will be February 10.
10. The next PALS meeting will be March 23 at 6:30p at the Electric CoOp Building.

Shooting Sports Update

Well we were able to send a few individuals off for shooting sports training! I am really excited that we are getting this going! I hope that we will have a lot of young people interested in participating in shooting sports. So talk it up my 4H friends!! Stay tuned for upcoming events that relate to shooting sports!

PALS Minutes - November 24, 2008

It has come to my attention that I had not actually posted the minutes for the last PALS meeting. I apologize for the late posting - I thought I had done them and yet...

The following minutes are from the PALS meeting held on November 24, 2008. Managers, please distribute to your club parents prior to the January PALS meeting.

Attendance: Vonnie Anderson, Wendy Emprimo, Willie Arnwine, Tandi Dickey, Melissa Rathbun, Michele Partin, Royce Traylor, Rene McCracken

1. The minutes from the September meeting were read and accepted.
2. Treasury Report – Treasurer was not in attendance. There is approximately $6,000 in the account.
3. Program leaders are still needed for various projects. Anyone can volunteer to lead the programs and all it takes is general interest in the topic. Materials and information is abundant and will be provided. If you have an interest in leading a project or joining a committee please do so.
4. Concession Stand Committee reported that clubs have been assigned times to work the Stand for the Livestock Show. Clubs should submit a schedule of individuals and shifts within their blocks by the January meeting. Volunteers will still be needed, however, especially Saturday night. If you are at the show and available, please stop by and offer to help.
5. Fundraising Committee reported they reviewed several options for fundraising which were passed at this time. They will be setting up a recycling program for printer cartridges and will report when the program is ready. In addition, added snack-sticks to the menu for the Livestock Show Concession. Wendy Emprimo presented an idea for an auction which will be added to the Committee’s next meeting agenda.
6. Yes! Camp Report – Willie Arnwine reported that 113 kids attended Yes! Camp – 11 from Cherokee County. Cherokee County was the 3rd largest county represented. PALS voted and approved reimbursement of $20 per person for those from Cherokee County who attended Yes! Camp and who attend Leadership Lab. This will be distributed via check directly to the attendees.
7. Motion to move PALS meetings to 6:30p was made and approved.
8. Blog Report – Willie Arnwine reported the Blog is being accessed by several areas. This is a positive promotion for our 4H clubs. Security/Privacy was discussed and agreed to keep the blog public but clubs advised to remove last names and/or personal information about the kids for safety reasons.
9. The next PALS meeting will be January 26 at 6:30p at the Electric CoOp Building.

If you have an interest in leading a project or joining a committee please do so.
Future PALS meeting dates and methods were discussed. PALS meetings were set for the 4th Monday Every Other Month. These meetings are face-to-face, but there could be conference calling or IM group meetings set up as well.
Concession Stand volunteering and management was discussed and tabled to the Concession Committee. It was agreed that the committee will determine the rules/requirements for club participation as this is our largest fund raiser (over $4,000 per year). If clubs are not willing to participate we may lose this very profitable fund-raiser.
The awards banquet for 2008 has been set for October 18. This banquet will recognize and award participants for the 2007/2008 year.
Several fundraising ideas were discussed. A Fundraising Committee will be created to address fundraising ideas and manage fundraising events. Vonnie Anderson will lead the committee.
The next PALS meeting is set for November 24.

August Minutes

The following minutes are from the PALS meeting held on 8-18-08. Managers, please make sure your parent have access to this before the September meeting. Thank you. :-)

Attendance: Vonnie Anderson, Melissa Rathbun, Willie Arnwine and Wendy Emprimo

1. There was much discussion on how we can get more parental involvement in the PALS organization. It was decided that there will be two mandatory meetings per year for ALL parents. The first will be held September 29th, 2008. All parents are required to be at the Orientation meeting for their children to participate this year. The second mandatory meeting will be held on January 26th 2009. The monthly meetings will be set up as "conference calls." These "meetings" will be held the last Monday of each month. Two representatives from each club will be required to participate in this meeting. If the initial representative is not available, then a substitute needs to take their place. (The location of this meeting will be given later.)

2. A few of the officers were elected. Vonnie Anderson is President, Amy Goodwin will remain Treasurer, Wendy Emprimo is Reporter and Interim Secretary. The other officers will be elected after the September meeting.

3. Willie reported that he needs "Project Leaders" to be available for the entire county. One volunteer will lead a particular project, and will be responsible for getting all information out to any interested party. He will make sure we are in contact with the people we need to talk to, and that we have all of the information we need. In essence this takes Willie out of the "middle man" position.

So far the following have volunteered for these projects:

Melissa Rathbun - Fashion Show; Consumer Decision Making
Wendy Emprimo - Photography

4. After some discussion it was decided that due to lack of participation, PALS will reduce camp funding. Instead PALS will help pay SOME entrance fees for the Jr. Stock Show. Their will be requirements that need to met.
As a parent, if your child participates in the Stock Show you MUST help with the Concession Stand for you child to receive partial sponsorship with the entrance fee. You must attend both Mandatory meetings. (If you have a legitimate reason for not attending, please run it by Willie.)

5. Managers, please make sure you turn in your Charter Forms to Willie ASAP. This is something that must now be done every year, by every club.

6. To get more involvement from each club with the Concession Stand a new rule has been suggested, but further action was tabled until a quorum could be gathered.

7. We also discussed many fundraising ideas. One idea was a "Bingo Night." Willie is going to visit the Diboll 4-H club to gather more information, and will report back in September.

8.Willie Arnwine and Melissa Rathbun were elected to the the By Law Committee and the Budget Committee.
